Bartman - the Dark Knight of Cubs History

Author: Bryan McGraw

At one of the Cubs darkest times, an overeager fan took the blame for 100 years of loss and agony.

Though a dedicated fan, a split second decision has turned into several years of hardship and turned his love for his team into his greatest burden.

Not by choice, this man carries the blame and burden of the collapse of a team that seemed destined for the World Series.

Now, years later, fans are split as to the feelings towards this man, this Dark Knight. Some still blame him, while others believe it could have happened to anyone.

In dark times, the true colors of a person are shown. In rare circumstances, a superhero of sorts is revealed.

In the movie, The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne continued carrying the burden of being Batman because he was the only man able to handle that burden. He was the only man able to fight against evil, even when those who were good started to stand against him.

It may not be coincidence that Batman and Bartman sound so close. In fact, their characters and paths have shared many similar circumstances.

Nobody can begin to understand what Bartman has endured. Temptation of money, turning his back on his beloved team, and even death threats.

Bartman's endurance and courage are shown by the fact that he continues to stand in the shadows carrying this burden, much like the Dark Knight. After all, who else would turn down $25,000 for one autograph?

Bartman knows that by showing his face as a publicity stunt or accepting temptation of money and fame, he transforms into the enemy of sorts.

A superhero in this realm would be classified as one who does not want to capitalize on the fame. One who stays away from the lights and cameras. One who turns down money for a simple autograph appearance. One who stays away from the team he so dearly loves.

Its not easy by any means and nobody could begin to understand what Steve Bartman has given up in life since that day. Much like a Dark Knight, Steve Bartman has endured pain, given up money and notoriety, and bears the burden of an entire fan nation eager to blame one person during their darkest hour.

As the dark side of Gotham City transformed Bruce Wayne into Batman, one of the darkest hours in Cubs history transformed Steve Bartman into the man he now is.

His beliefs separate him from others and make him who he is. The true fan, who stands alone unable to cheer for his team. The true Dark Knight of the Chicago Cubs.
